Climate Heating in New England More Rapidly Than Most Places on Earth, Analysis Shows.
The American area renowned for its colonial history, maple syrup and bitterly cold, snow-covered winters is experiencing a swift change. New research shows that New England is warming more quickly than almost anywhere else on the globe.
Breakneck Pace of Change
The rate of warming in New England makes it the most rapidly warming region of the continental United States, according to the study. The pace of its warming has apparently increased significantly in the last half-decade.
"The temperature is not only rising, it's accelerating," stated a primary researcher on the study. "It's really sped up in recent years, which surprised me. Our regional climate is moving in a new direction, after being relatively stable for thousands of years."
The research places the north-eastern US among the fastest-warming areas in the world, together with the polar region and sections of Europe and China. "The region is now heading towards being like the American South," the scientist noted.
Analysis Approach and Findings
For the study, researchers examined multiple data sources on day and night temperatures and snow cover dating back to 1900. The analysis covered the six states of the New England region.
They found that New England has warmed by an mean of 4.5 degrees Fahrenheit from 1900 to 2024. This is substantially higher than the worldwide mean, with the planet warming by around 1.3°C in the same period.
"That is extremely rapid warming, which is alarming," commented the researcher.
Key Climate Trends
- Nighttime temperatures are increasing more quickly than maximum temperatures.
- Winters are warming at double the speed of other times of year.
- The harsh winter chill characteristic of the region is being reduced.
Marine Factors and the "Heat Battery"
A major reason for this exceptional build-up of heat may be changes in the North Atlantic. The world's oceans are taking in more than 90% of the excess heat trapped by emissions.
In the north Atlantic, an influx of meltwater from Greenland’s melting glaciers is slowing down the Gulf Stream. This is directing heated ocean water into the Gulf of Maine, congregating heat along the coastline that is then carried further inland by prevailing winds.
"Surplus thermal energy from global warming is being stored in the sea like a huge storage unit," said the researcher. "This is now being discharged into the air and New England is a receiver of that heat."
Consequences on Life and Extremes
Once considered a relatively stable region, New England has experienced severe climate events in recent years, including devastating flooding and extended dry spells.
The rising heat endangers iconic elements of regional life:
- Maple syrup production is facing challenges by changing seasonal patterns.
- Winter sports are disrupted; an hockey tournament on frozen lakes has been canceled or moved multiple times due to unsafe ice conditions.
- Winter tourism have faced difficulties because of insufficient snowfall.
"I live just outside Boston and when I moved here in the 1990s I used to skate on the local ponds regularly," recalled the researcher. "That tradition has pretty much disappeared from large parts of southern New England."
