Entire Career of Earnings Inadequate for UK Employees to Join Richest 10%, Study Finds

Based on new research, the typical employee in the UK would require 52 years' worth of salary to reach the financial standing of the wealthiest 10% nationwide.

Widening Economic Disparity Across Decades

The analysis reviewed financial assets information from the Covid pandemic period and determined that in the mid-2000s, it would have required 38 years' worth of typical employment income to join the top 10th of the financial hierarchy.

A research lead involved with the report stated: "Financial divides in Britain are presently so substantial that a typical full-time employee accumulating their complete salary during their working years would continue to be incapable to attain the highest level of the economic scale."

Measuring the Wealth Divide

The research found that the gap between the net worth of the average person and someone in the wealthiest decile was £1m in the mid-2000s, but had expanded to £1.3 million in real terms by 2020-22.

The analyst added: "These disparities are especially alarming as financial progression in Britain is limited – those who commence life affluent tend to continue being rich, and vice versa."

Proportional Economic Disparity

Although the financial disparity widening in absolute terms, the share of complete net worth in the UK held by the wealthiest families – called "relative wealth inequality" – has been "largely unchanged since the 1980s," per the analysis.

During this period, overall assets in the UK increased dramatically from thrice the annual GDP, to almost 7.5 times.

Drivers of Wealth Inequality

Referred to as "passive" increases, by means of rising house prices and variations in retirement fund assessments, were the primary factors of the expanding economic divide from 2010 onward, per the report.

These gains tended to accrue to older, property-owning households, the analysis reveals – exacerbating the age-based economic gap.

Age-Based Economic Gaps

The median economic difference between individuals aged 30-34 and people aged 60-64 increased over twofold in real terms, from 135 thousand pounds in the mid-2000s, to £310k.

Geographic Variations

There were also significant regional variations, with the median value of wealth in 2020-22 reaching 290 thousand pounds in the southeastern region, where housing costs have typically increased quickly, as opposed to £110,000 in the northeastern region.

Health Crisis Years Effects

Amid the health crisis, when numerous employees were covered under the taxpayer-backed furlough scheme, and pandemic lockdowns curtailed consumption options, the information reveals countless homes were in a position to set aside money, increasing their wealth.

Wealthier families achieved superior outcomes, though. "The median home in the poorest fifth saw their cash reserves grow by only eighty pounds throughout the health crisis (from 2019 to 2022), roughly identical to the 24 months before COVID. Conversely, the median home in the highest income quintile saw their cash reserves rise by £4,200," the analysis concludes.
