Heat and Trail Blazers Earn Initial Wins Following Player Detentions
Miami scored eighty-six first-half points versus the Grizzlies
Miami Heat claimed a overwhelming 146 to 114 victory against the Grizzlies in their initial NBA match after guard Rozier was detained for alleged illegal gambling.
Portland Trail Blazers coach Billups was also detained as part of a broad federal investigation into illegal gambling. The two individuals deny the claims.
But, the Miami team were focused as they put up 86 first-half points to be ahead of Memphis by 39 after two quarters, the biggest halftime lead in the team's 37 year existence.
Adebayo top-scored with 24 scores and later stated Rozier had the support of the team.
"We support him. Complete backing," Adebayo stated. "You support him through and through. That's our brother ultimately."
Heat coach Spoelstra added: "Terry is a person who is important to everyone. He's had a real positive impact on our locker room.
"Our thoughts are with him and our care for him as he faces the situation."
The Trail Blazers also won their initial match since the arrests, with Brazil-born Tiago Splitter stepping in as interim coach in Billups' non-attendance and leading the squad to a decisive 139 to 119 win against the Golden State Warriors.
"Everyone experienced positive times with Chauncey and his coaching style," Splitter remarked. "We're thinking of him and his family but our focus is on the game."
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver 'Upset' over Recent Events
Speaking about the arrests for the first time, NBA commissioner Adam Silver said he was "deeply disturbed" by the events of the recent days.
"Nothing is more critical to the NBA and supporters than the integrity of the competition," he informed Amazon Prime. "And so I had a pit in my stomach. It was disturbing."
Silver also mentioned an league probe into Rozier's actions in spring 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a match he participated for the Hornets versus the New Orleans Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.
"It was brought to our attention by the authorities and the betting companies," he added.
"We investigated that situation and were very transparent about it. Although there was that aberrational betting, we, honestly, found no evidence.
"The federal government has subpoena power... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can do all kinds of things that the league office can't do.
"Therefore, we've been working with them from that point. And, of course, what they revealed recently was an indictment.
"Moreover 30 months after, he still hasn't been convicted of anything, in fairness to Rozier.
"Clearly, it appears unfavorable, but he's been suspended, and so it is a compromise here between protecting people's rights and investigating."
