Edwards and O'Neil represent the initial candidates under consideration to succeed the former manager as manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The previous coach was sacked on Sunday after the team's 10-match without a victory beginning to the Premier League season.
And both candidates - each of whom have historic links to the club - are among the names to be considered by the Wolves ownership.
Edwards is currently at Middlesbrough, which would create a potential obstacle to his hiring at Molineux.
Nevertheless the ex- Luton Town head coach - who played over a century of appearances for Wolves during his playing career - is considered a leading contender for the position.
The mid-career manager is said to have support from the Wolves directors as they begin the process of appointing a new manager.
Gary O'Neil is also emerging as a unexpected contender, although he would be a shock choice considering he was sacked by Wolves in the previous winter.
The ex- West Ham United midfielder is out of work meaning the club would not need to provide any compensation.
