Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System for the First Time.

The Championships court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes are granted the ability to challenge particular rulings made by the official, mirroring the practice currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
